Support for international and newly arrived students
Parmant Scholen has extensive experience supporting international students and students who are new to the Netherlands. We understand that starting school in a new country – often in a new language – takes time, care, and clear guidance.
We begin with a careful intake together with students and parents, to determine which school and educational route fits best. Because our schools work closely together as one group, students can move between schools or levels when their development requires it. This ensures continuity and flexibility throughout their school career.
Students who have attended education in the Netherlands for less than six years receive additional language and learning support. Each school has a dedicated language coach who works with students on their Dutch language development, both in lessons and assessments. Students also receive a Taalpas, which provides access to appropriate facilities and arrangements, enabling them to show what they truly know and can do.
Whether your child is staying in the Netherlands temporarily or for a longer period, already speaks Dutch or is still learning the language, Parmant Schools offers a suitable and supportive educational pathway. We invite you to explore our schools and discover how we help students build confidence, develop their talents, and prepare for the future in the Brainport region.
The Dutch school system explained
In the Netherlands, all children attend primary school from the age of 4 to 12. After primary school, students move on to secondary education, which is divided into three main educational streams. This system allows students to learn at a level that best matches their abilities and learning style.
The three main school track options are:
1. Pre-vocational secondary education (vmbo),
2. Senior general secondary education (havo),
3. Pre-university education (vwo).
Vmbo – Preparatory vocational education
Vmbo is a four-year secondary education stream with a strong practical focus. Students combine vocational subjects with general subjects such as Dutch and English. There are different vmbo levels, ranging from highly practical (basisberoepsgerichte leerweg) to more academically oriented (theoretische leerweg) or a combination of both (kaderberoepsgerichte leerweg). Vmbo prepares students for further vocational education (mbo) and is usually completed around the age of 16. Students who complete vmbo-t can progress to havo.
Parmant Aloysius, Parmant Antoon, Parmant Florian, Parmant Innova and Parmant Joris offer vmbo.
Havo – Senior general secondary education
Havo is a five-year programme that prepares students for higher professional education at universities of applied sciences (hbo). Students typically complete havo around the age of 17 and can continue towards a bachelor’s degree in applied sciences (hbo).
Parmant Helder and Parmant Joris offer havo.
Vwo – Pre-university education
Vwo is a six-year academically focused programme that prepares students for research universities. Students usually complete vwo around the age of 18 and continue towards a bachelor’s degree at a university.
Parmant Helder and Parmant Joris offer vwo.
